"See the sun rise. So loud, this whole town gets drowned out."
On Monday I walked around in the sun and listened to Whip-Smart as loud as I could stand it in my headphones. I thought about how I have been listening to it over and over since I 19 years old and living with my dad. In the spring of 1996, I played May Queen as loud as I could from the living room stereo so when I stood outside in the sun I heard it shaking through the house.
I remember sitting on the steps with my dad, listening to Alice Springs and feeling like that was MY SONG. Go West was talking to me and telling me to move to California and in 1997 that was just what I did.
Now it barely happens that I feel like all the songs are for me. Is that getting older? I am not sure.
On Monday I realized WhipSmart is my go-to music. When I am sad and lonely, it's what I feel like hearing. Sometimes it makes me feel better, sometimes it just lets me feel bad. It's like an old friend that way. I feel glad to know it's there.
Do you have music like that?
